Johnson was a collegiate football national champion with the University of Miami in 1991. He also wanted to play professional football but was passed over in the 1995 NFL Draft. He signed with the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Calgary Stampeders, but was released after his first season. Johnson’s father Rocky and maternal grandpa Peter Maivia both worked as professional wrestlers, and he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in the year 1996.
After adopting the gimmick of a charismatic trash-talker, he came to stardom and helped usher in the Attitude Era, a period of industry development in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Johnson departed WWE in 2004 and returned in 2011 as a part-time performer until 2013, when he retired. He is a 10-time world champion and WWE’s sixth Triple Crown champion. In 2017, he starred in Baywatch, a comedy based on the popular TV show about lifeguards, and “Jumanji”: Welcome to the Jungle, a film based on a Chris Van Allsburg children’s novel. In the action film “Skyscraper” the next year, Johnson played a father who goes to extraordinary lengths to save his family from a burning skyscraper. He then appeared in Fast &Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw in both 2019, a spin-off from the long-running franchise, and Jumanji: The Next Level (both 2017), a sequel to the 2017 blockbuster. Johnson appeared in a number of television shows. He starred in Ballers in 2015 to 2019, an HBO comedy series about a former football player who becomes a financial counsellor to other sports stars, and he presented the reality television series The Hero in 2013. Johnson went on to produce and host the reality TV show The Titan Games (2019–), which featured various athletic competitions. Later, he starred in the comedy series Young Rock (2021–), which was based on his life.
Johnson made his comeback appearance in the ring in seven years in 2011, igniting a feud with WWE superstar John Cena that culminated in a main-event battle at WrestleMania XXVIII in April 2012. WrestleMania XXVIII was WWE’s highest-grossing pay-per-view broadcast, with more than 1.3 million pay-per-view orders and $67 million in global sales. Johnson won his ninth professional wrestling title in January 2013, but he gave it up less than three months later after losing to Cena in another highly publicized match.
He wrestled for WWE for eight years before pursing an acting career. He is widely recognized as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time. His films have grossed over $3.5 billion in North America and over $10.5 billion globally, making him one of the highest-paid and highest-grossing performers in the world.
