Since former Michigan star and former New York Giants defensive back Jabrill Peppers in 2016, he was the first New Jersey native to be a Heisman finalist. 

In 1999, Overbrook product Ron Dayne, a running back at Wisconsin who later had a career with the Giants,

became the third New Jersey high school football product to win the Heisman Trophy. 

Pickett had hoped to become the first player from that state since 1999 to do so.
