Kid Rock began his musical career as a rapper and DJ, debuting with the Jive Records release of Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast in 1990.

His particular style began to take shape with his successive indie albums, The Polyfuze Method (1993) and Early Morning Stoned Pimp (1996),

In general, "Picture" (2002) and "All Summer Long" are his best-selling singles (2008). His musical output has tended to get more experimental with his 2007 album Rock n Roll Jesus.

Robert James Ritchie, the son of car dealership owners Susan and William Ritchie, was born on January 17, 1971, in Romeo, Michigan.

Actress Jill Ritchie is his younger sister. He developed an interest in hip hop in the 1980s while participating in talent contests in and around Detroit, learning how to breakdance, rap, and DJ.

In the late 1980s, Kid Rock was a member of the hip hop group The Beast Crew, where he started his professional music career

He met the rapper D-Nice at this time. He would soon start local performances for Boogie Down Productions thanks to that connection. 

When Clark and Kid Rock created a number of demos in 1988, six major record labels, including Atlantic and CBS Records, finally made offers.

Kid Rock acquired stock in "Top Dog" Records, an independent record company established by Alvin Williams and Earl Blunt of EB-Bran Productions, in 1989.

At the age of 17, Kid Rock joined Jive Records with the assistance of D-Nice, releasing his Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast first studio album in 1990.
