Machado left Sunday's game against the Rockies with a left ankle sprain after he stepped awkwardly on first base. He doesn't yet have a clear timeline for his return, but he'll miss at least one game, with acting manager Ryan Flaherty saying the team was optimistic he'd be able to avoid the injured list, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

Very highly recruited from an early age, he was raised in Miami, where he attended Brito High School and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the third overall pick in the 2010 MLB draft. He bats and throws right-handed.

Machado made his MLB debut in August 2012. Machado had his breakout year in 2013, earning a spot on the American League (AL) All-Star team on his way to leading the league in doubles with 51.

He was also recognized as one of the best fielders in the game, winning a Gold Glove Award. Machado won his second Gold Glove in 2015, and made the All-Star Game in 2015, 2016, and 2018.

DENVER -- San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado left Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies after injuring his left ankle while taking a tumble at first base trying to beat out an infield grounder.

Machado's leg appeared to turn awkwardly while he was running to first base in the top of the first inning. He struggled to put weight on the ankle as he was helped off the field. Machado was later diagnosed with an ankle sprain after X-rays came back negative.

"Hebner and his brother Earl helped author one of the most memorable moments in WWE history when Andre The Giant and Hogan met on WWE Main Event for the WWE Title in 1988. With Dave locked in a closet, Earl and ‘Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase laid a trap for The Hulkster. As Dave joined Earl in the ring, he had the befuddled Hogan seeing double in disbelief," the company said.

Machado stretched his left leg toward the base trying to beat the throw from pitcher Antonio Senzatela. Machado's cleat appeared to slip across the top of the bag and he fell to the ground, his left leg buckling beneath him.

Sergio Alcantara replaced Machado at third base when the Padres took the field in the bottom of the first inning at Coors Field.

Headed into Sunday's game, he was tops on the Padres in batting average (.329), home runs (12), RBIs (46) and hits (83). San Diego, strong on the road this season at 24-13 through Saturday, began Sunday a half-game behind the Dodgers.
