Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker. Known for both his comedic and dramatic roles, he is one of the most popular and recognizable film stars worldwide, and is regarded as an American cultural icon.

Hanks's films have grossed more than $4.9 billion in North America and more than $9.96 billion worldwide, making him the fourth-highest-grossing actor in North America.

Hanks made his breakthrough with leading roles in a series of comedy films which received positive media attention, such as Splash (1984), Bachelor Party (1984), Big (1988) and A League of Their Own (1992). He won two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor for starring as a gay lawyer suffering from AIDS in Philadelphia (1993) and the title character in Forrest Gump (1994)

Hanks's accolades include two Academy Awards out of six nominations. Hanks has also won seven Primetime Emmy Awards for his work as a producer of various limited series and television movies, including From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific.

National treasure Tom Hanks transformed from actor to protector when a group of crazed fans got too close to his wife, Rita Wilson.

The Oscar-winning actor became enraged when the overzealous group nearly knocked over Wilson, who ended up losing her footing and wobbling away, while out in New York City Wednesday night.

Wilson and Hanks have been married for 34 years. They met in 1981 on the set of “Bosom Buddies,” a sitcom that ran from 1980 to 1982.

At the time, Hanks was still married to his first wife, college sweetheart Samantha Lewes, with whom he had two children, actor son Colin Hanks, 44, and daughter Elizabeth Hanks, 40.

Chet has battled with his own demons over the years but just recently marked nine months of sobriety. Despite his dad’s flawless reputation, Chet claimed in February that he did not have a “strong male role model” growing up.

“‘You have all these things that they want, so they are trying to f–king throw their shade at you so you can feel s–tty about yourself because they are jealous.’ I needed to hear that,” Chet explained.
