Hugh McKean was an American politician from Loveland, Colorado, who died on October 30, 2022, on October 27, 1967. Republican McKean represented the area around Loveland and the Colorado House of Representatives District 51. His first election was in 2016.

Hugh McKean Early Life

McKean previously held the position of Loveland City Councilor before being elected as a state representative. McKean served as the 73rd General Assembly’s elected House Minority Leader from January 13, 2021, until his passing in October 2022. Three days after turning 55, on October 30, 2022, McKean suffered a heart attack at home. In the November 8, 2022 elections, he was running unopposed for a fourth term at the time of his passing.

Hugh McKean, the 55-year-old Republican House Minority Leader from Colorado, passed away on Sunday morning from a heart attack.

The Republican from Larimer County leaves behind his partner, Amy Parks, and their two children, Aiden and Hanna McKean.

Republican colleagues recalled McKean as a committed public figure who devoted his life to Colorado. When he was elected to the Loveland City Council in 2009, McKean entered politics for the first time.

Colorado GOP Chairwoman Kristi Burton Brown said in a statement that visiting his office at the Capitol with her children was one of her favorite memories of him. “Despite having a hectic legislative session, he still found time to show my kids around his office, explain his science exhibits to them, and make an effort to become involved in their life, even for a short while. Behind the political scene was a Hugh McKean who liked people and was willing to invest in them.
