On August 22, 2022, Mayfield was selected to start Week 1’s matchup between the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns. Despite a late comeback, Mayfield lost to the Browns 26-24 after throwing for 235 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Mayfield missed the following week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams due to a high ankle sprain he sustained in the Panthers’ Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
