Early Life
Joe Biden was born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and then, when he was ten years old, his family moved to New Castle County, Delaware. Prior to obtaining his law degree from Syracuse University in 1968, he completed his studies at the University of Delaware. After being chosen to serve on the New Castle County Council in 1970, he was elected to the United States Senate from Delaware in 1972 at the age of 29, making him the sixth-youngest senator in American history. The son of Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. and Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Biden (née Finnegan) was born on November 20, 1942, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is the eldest child in a Catholic household with two brothers, Francis and James, and a sister named Valerie. While Joseph Sr. had Huguenot ancestry that included English, French, and Irish, Jean was of Irish descent. Stonemason William Biden, who was born in Westbourne, England, in 1789 and immigrated to Maryland in the United States by 1820, is the ancestor of Biden’s paternal line.
Joe Biden oversaw six U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings, including the contentious hearings for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, and chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995, which dealt with issues relating to drug policy, crime prevention, and civil liberties. He also led the effort to pass the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act and the Violence Against Women Act. In 1988 and 2008, he made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. As vice president for eight years, Biden frequently represented the administration in discussions with congressional Republicans, drawing on his Senate background. These discussions included the Budget Control Act of 2011, which ended a debt ceiling crisis, and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which addressed the looming “fiscal cliff.” In 2009, he was in charge of overseeing infrastructure expenditures to fight the Great Recession. As the president’s close adviser on international affairs, Biden played a key role in planning the 2011 withdrawal of American forces from Iraq. In order to aid the United States in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing recession, Biden devised, lobbied for, and signed into law the American Rescue Plan Act. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was also signed into law, included elements of his planned American Jobs Plan. Ketanji Brown Jackson was his choice for the Supreme Court. Death of Wife and Daughter
Few weeks after the election, on December 18, 1972, Joe Biden’s wife Neilia and their 1-year-old daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident in Hockessin, Delaware, while out Christmas shopping. As Neilia backed out of an intersection, a semi-trailer truck struck her station wagon. Beau, who had a fractured leg and other wounds, and Hunter, who had a mild skull fracture and other head injuries, were their boys who survived the accident and were transferred to the hospital in fair condition. Biden thought about leaving his position to take care of them, but Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield convinced him otherwise.

Political Struggles and Activities
During the mail bombing attempts in October 2018 that targeted Democratic politicians and opponents of the then-presidential Trump, Biden received two pipe bombs. Due to insufficient postage, one device was discovered in New Castle, Delaware, where it was investigated, while another was discovered at a location in Wilmington, Delaware, where it was intercepted. Later, it was discovered that the devices had been purposefully created so as not to explode.
