Early Life
Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark was born on May 29, 1970, in Manhattan, New York, to socialite and philanthropist Maria Stark and businessman and inventor Howard Stark. His life was defined by a distant and uncaring connection with his father when he was growing up under the watchful eye of the household butler Edwin Jarvis. Knowing that his son was capable of great things, Howard tried to motivate him by frequently discussing his personal contribution to the birth of Captain America. Instead, Stark was enraged by this, believing that his father was more proud of his creations than of his family. Stark, a smart and exceptional child prodigy, attended MIT for two years beginning at age 14 and received his summa cum laude diploma at age 17.
Becoming Iron Man
In order to display his new “Jericho” missile, Stark goes to war-torn Afghanistan in 2010 with his close friend and military liaison Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes. Following the demonstration, the convoy is ambushed, and a terrorist organization known as the Ten Rings captures Stark and badly injures him. In order to prevent shrapnel shards from entering Stark’s heart and killing him, fellow inmate and doctor Ho Yinsen implants a magnetic into Stark’s chest.
To power Stark’s electromagnet and a set of powered armor, Yinsen and Stark develop an arc reactor in secret, a little but potent electric generator. Yinsen sacrifices himself to divert the Ten Rings’ attack on the workshop while the suit is being made. To save the dying Yinsen, the armored Stark fights his way out of the cave. He then destroys the weapons from the Ten Rings in rage before taking off and crashes in the desert. After being saved by Rhodes, Stark leaves his house and declares that his business will stop producing weapons. Stark creates a sleeker, more potent version of his homemade armor suit as well as a more potent arc reactor at his workshop at home.
Creating Ultron
2015 saw a raid by Stark and the Avengers on a Hydra base run by Wolfgang von Strucker, who was utilizing the Loki-era scepter to experiment on Pietro and Wanda Maximoff’s siblings. Stark enters the facility and discovers the scepter being built alongside Chitauri ships from the Battle of New York while the crew is engaged in combat outside. Wanda approaches him covertly and using mind-control techniques to grant him a chilling vision of the deaths of all the Avengers except for him. After waking up from the vision, Stark goes to get Loki’s scepter.
As they make their way back to the Avengers Tower, Stark and Bruce Banner find an AI hidden inside the scepter’s diamond and decide to use it to finish Stark’s “Ultron” global defense project. Stark’s AI J.A.R.V.I.S is destroyed by the unexpectedly sentient Ultron, who then attacks the Avengers. After escaping with the scepter, Ultron creates an army of robotic drones, murders Strucker, and hires the Maximoffs, who hold Stark accountable for the use of his company’s weaponry to kill their parents. When the Avengers locate and defeat Ultron in Johannesburg, Banner turns into the Hulk and goes on the attack until Stark stops him with his anti-Hulk armor, but Wanda subdues the majority of the squad with individualized, unsettling images.
